GawadKalinga (GK) (“to give care in Tagalog”) is a Philippine poverty alleviation and nation-building movement known officially as the GawadKalinga Community Development Foundation Incorporated. It is an alternative solution to the blatant problem of poverty not just in the Philippines but in the world. GK’s vision for the Philippines is a slum-free nation through a simple strategy of providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless, food for the hungry and as a result providing dignity and peace for every Filipino.

HISTORY:Around 2011-2012, LGU Del Carmen purchased a land (1.98 ha) at Brgy. Lobogon without knowing yet what to do about it. Months later, the barangay chairman of Brgy. Lobogon called the Mayor informing him of some families that will be directly affected by the road widening program of DPWH. It’s a familiar picture that houses are built alongside the road. Mayor Alfredo “JR” Coro II, then the mayor (up to the present) and a GK volunteer, sought GawadKalinga Surigao del Norte through Efren Ravelo, the GK Provincial Head.Thus, finding the reason of why that particular parcel of land was purchased: October 19, 2012 – groundbreaking of the first GK village. On April 2013, the 1stBayani Challenge in Caraga Region was done in Del Carmen, Siargao Islands to start the first GK Siargao Village and Program.WalangIwanan!!
